I think this system is good for what it is -- an alternative for people where it fits their style.

As Andrew mentioned, he identified early on the need to make sure that weaker players in multi-player campaigns didn't get discouraged and quit.  That design criterion led to the fairly large scoring bands, such that a player could lose a close match and have it score a draw and only really crushing victories count as decisive.  I agree with him that this is the right way to go for most groups, especially groups of more than two players.

For some, however, that doesn't apply.  If a group's players are all of similar skill and/or you're going to play Battleground regularly anyway and just want to do it in the context of a campaign (i.e. the weaker players aren't going to quit) then this is a fun alternative.
