I convinced a Magic regular to pick up Battleground last night and he's now super psyched for this!

As for his faction, let's just say we may have found "Giant War Elephant Kid Part 2: T-Rex Dude!"

Awesome--more gaming karma to Niko!  Cheesy

Just make sure he understands that a pinched T-Rex is a dead T-Rex.  The (unofficial, but used in the tournament) 3-CA-to-Direct-Control Rule should help somewhat.

A mid-action report.

We had 15 people, 3 more than last year.

Here's the finals tree, which will happen Sunday.

#1 Bohan (Zelc) - Umenzi  vs. #8 Ian (local, not online) - Hawkshold.
#4 Jaime (Mexico) - Rome vs. #5 Chinzang (local, not online) - Carthage

#2 Seth (local, not online) - Dark Elves vs. #7 Ron (BubblePig) - Ravenwood
#3 Niko - Ravenwood vs. #6 Chad - Ravenwood

Congratulations to all the winners, and thanks to everyone who came and played--I had a gread time putting it on!

Without further ado, the Results...

Championship
1st:  Seth - Dark Elves
2nd:  Jaime - Rome
3rd:  Bohan - Umenzi
4th:  Chad - Ravenwood

(I'm 2nd from left; Chad is 2nd from right.)

Sunday Speed Swiss
1st:  Ron - Dark Elves
2nd:  Brook (Gornhorror) - Lizardmen
3rd:  Tim  (GoIndy) - Orcs
4th:  Mike (gull2112; who had to leave early & missed the group photo) - Monsters & Mercs.

(People were allowed to play a different faction in the Sunday Speed Swiss from what they played in the main tournament.  Folks who lost the quarterfinals were allowed to enter the Speed Swiss for round 2, though some people who got knocked out in the quarterfinals had had enough Battleground for the day.)

More, including a zillion photos, to come!

I think these results are incorrect...I think I won!!  Not because of who won 'officially', but the fact that somehow I got a faction that absolutely everyone thinks is weak nerfed!!  (And got zilcho in return for the unit being nerfed)  Somewhat seriously, the Dark Elves won both tournaments, have some ludicrous abilities, yet the mercs got nerfed!!  And I'll go to the mattress all day on the lashmistress versus the elementalist, and one of those cost 50 more than the other....

I'll have some more serious thoughts in the rule changes thread.

Thanks for another excellently run event Kevin.  It was a great time and all of my opponents where sporting and fun to play.  It was nice playing against/chatting/hanging out with Mike, Chad, Niko, Kevin, Jaime, Seth, Bohan, Ian, Will, Rachael, and all of the rest.  And an extra special thanks to the Jersey crew that I came up with (Brook, Chris, Tim).  WE SUCK!!!!!

Now order me another of those Crunchy Cheesy Gordita Boxes...

It was great to see the Jersey crowd as usual, and thanks for the book!  See you all at the next event!

------------

An interesting fact about the top 3 of Championship this year:  they actually formed a loop:  Seth beat Jaime, who beat Bohan, who beat Seth.  So the place in the tournament was really determined by the nearly dumb luck of which match happened when.

In all seriousness, this was the largest tournament ever, and IMNSHO the highest to date in terms of player skill.  (Also, if I may say so, the rule changes over the past year have better balanced the factions vs. each other).

There were more than 4 players who were easily good enough to make the final 4, and there were more than 8 players easily good enough to make final 8.  By definition some folks were going to get squeezed out prize-wise.  The key part is to have a good time regardless, and--win or lose--the Jersey Boys are masters of the good time.

High Blood Prince of Conquered Ravenwood

« Reply #177 on: February 20, 2012, 02:07:58 pm »

Hey all - thanks for a great tournament!

I really thought I was going to go down hard with five(!) Ravenwood players. It was a very hard fought tournament for me against the best of the best. Thanks to everyone I played for being great sports--and to the people I didn't play, it was great to see many of you again after Council. I had a great, if edgy time! Hope to see you all again soon!

Great praise should go to Kevin as well. Not only for giving away his money but for running a smooth event. Hopefully we can recruit yet more players next year!

Congratulations again, Seth!   And yeah, you definitely clawed your way to the top the hard way!  (Which makes for better stories.  Smiley )
Not just being up to your ears in Ravenwood, but also Jaime's Romans at the end (and the beginning).

Congratulations Seth! You are a very wily tournament player, cleverly avoiding a match with me, I see how you are.  Wink

Thanks to Kevin for organizing the tourney, and for giving me somewhere to go and something to do. Cheesy

Thanks to Niko for letting us Final Rush his store.

Thanks to Marcus and the Jersey boys for making it extra fun.

It was a great time being with my BattleGround family again. Hope I can make Cof5N this fall.

And most of all, thanks to Rachael for enduring our combined presence for hours with poise and charm.  Cool
