That's it Dave, next time I see you I'm gonna tweak your nipples.

I'm a fan of the idea of Norseman faction myself, so no bothers there.  I wouldn't be heartbroken if YMG did insects and they came out your way and not mine.  I'd just prefer to see a more unified insect army.  Brook and I had a long discussion on the way home from work tonight (we have long commutes) and we came up with some pretty neat stuff.  Wait til we have a chance to get things together and presentable with the Deep Dwarves before you hop off that wagon.

And I am not talking about normal bears and human sized riders here. I am talking about dire bears and Large humanoids riding on top of them.
Supersizing a McDonald's Quarter Pounder doesn't make the meal any more appetizing...

Sorry but also one series of books will not make bear cavalry a cliché, please.....

A few quick thoughts:

On the insects I think there's a huge range of possibilities, depending on the back-story we envision.  Did some mad alchemist's experiments lead to a sentient Queen who killed him and then took over the results of his work?  That could easily justify many different insects but perhaps with only one species being non-mindless (with the other species held as slaves).  Or is it a more natural "evolution"?  In that case you might have just one species with perhaps a few domesticated units, but even then you'd have more variety than just age.

Termites, for example, have evolved multiple warrior types.  There are some with large pincers, some that spit a sticky substance, some with heavily armored heads that basically plug a tunnel opening.  I'm going back to my junior high school biology project so I'm sure my memory isn't perfect but I think those types can show up in a single species/hive.  Mating termite pairs grow wings.

On the terra-cotta warriors, it's important to remember that the statues were originally painted in vivid colors -- the images we see aren't what they looked like in the day.  So this would be an absolutely beautiful army.

Termites, eh? That is totally unique for an insect army. Can the same intra-species diversity be found among other insects? To that large degree of differentiation, I mean.

Interesting, nonetheless...

One aspect of insect armies that hasn't been brought up yet, is if you're going to do a fantasy insect army then it might be more apprapo to go with an insectmen type variation, anthropodic arthropods if you will. Wink

You can say just about everything has been done before- that doesnt make it a bad idea.

Different kind of insects? Flyers, spitters, warriors,etc- like Starship Troopers? Wink
(or even Tyranids-different creatures evolved for different jobs)
Still great ideas for a new faction.

Im just saying its very, very hard to come up with something totally original.

While it's true that there's very little new, some things are more original.  The biggest turnoff about an insect faction is how common it is.  I meant if you're drawing Tyranid/Starship Troopers comparisons in one breath so will everyone else.  But I can't think of anyone doing a fantasy Chinese army.

Strongly for the Teracotta army.

I can. Arcane Legions miniatures game- The Han. and guess what? Teracotta warriors. Not as common as "bugs" though.
But check out the Arcane Legions game- The Han faction & compare it to the ideas being kicked around now & see if there are any similarities.

Dark Elves werent a original idea- but people were still happy to see the deck released.

Rat swarms, cheap infantry, quirky warmachines, etc, etc.

I'd love to see a Demon army.  Who wouldn't want to throw down with an infernal army bent on destruction and corruption?   Wink  It could also fit the high toughness mentioned in the the original post as demon skin should be tough and almost work like natural armor to light weapons.

A full list of my top 5 would be:

1. Demons
2. Lycanthope (werewolves, wererats, wereboars, werebears, etc)
3. MereCat (no not the cute critters on the discovery channel) race with allies.  Allies would be large cats (Lions, leopards, Cheetahs).
4. Insect
5. Ratmen

I think Niko has cooked up a demon faction.  I am slightly miffed that he didn't include me in the process.

Strictly speaking artwise:

I'm very down with the demon/chaos army. I could create some VERY nasty things.

The lycanthropes I think I can handle.

MereCats, I could probably handle as well.

Insects? Not so much.

Ratmen? There is a model out for them but it's not that great.

How about a "mixed" faction?
Like the armies of Aslan & the Ice Witch.
