This time I want to know what armies people really like the flavor of.  Again, it's up to you exactly what this means.  Maybe you like the Umenzi because they're different, the Orcs because of I Kill you Meself and the Lash, or the Lizardmen because of the story the cards tell about their life cycle.  In this case, though, set gameplay aside.

M&M as an actual army (not as mercs).  I love the rag tag band of a bunch of different races/factions/whatever coming together to form one army.

Umenzi because they are so *different* than anything else, but they still fit in so well. Excellent way to expand on the same old tired fantasy themes.

Again, Lizzies for me. I had way too much fun, developing their life cycle in images. :p

As you've probably guessed, I voted for Rome.  I could easily have voted for Runegard (I think their cycle of command cards is one of our best mergers of flavor and gameplay) or the Umenzi, but so far the Roman army is my favorite.

The main reason is the resolution of a central problem -- Rome fought with deep ranks (e.g. Hastati, then Principes, then Triarii) and deep ranks simply don't work in a system like Battleground.  We considered any number of fudges -- some historical gamers actually suggested just having "heavy infantry" units that would represent one rank of each type.  Gradually we developed the units and command cards so that Rome works as the "backup" army.  It's still usually a bit much to have three full ranks of troops (unless in a scenario that calls for it) but it is rare indeed that a Roman army's front line won't all be backed up at the start of play and for much of the rest of the game.

I was sorely tempted to vote Runegard, but I have to give the nod to the Umenzi just for being so freaking weird.

Chad, you can't tease us with votes for Romans and Carthaginians without giving us a slight preview!

While waiting to change my vote, I currently favor the Umenzi.  They have an identity which is unique among all of the miniature combat games, and implement it very well.  You definitely don't care about single units when playing them, and I'll always remember the face of my opponent the first time I deployed 16 units in a 2000 points game.

I love the lizardmen flavor text.  You get a true feeling for the race.  The Monsters and Mercs comes in second.
