Hello everyone, as instructed, I am posting so I'm not deleted.  I must say that I'm really becoming a big fan of Battleground.  I am a miniatures gamer; however, time and funds are becoming more and more something I just don't have to throw around.  I saw an advertisement for Battleground on The Miniatures Page forum and thought it would be interesting to try, but I couldn't find the game anywhere.  Not too long ago I ran into the game at a local shop and decided to try it out.

There are a number of things I really like about Battleground.

1. Cost- very inexpensive!  That has really been a great selling point to myself and other guys in the group.  $30 gets you more than enough to play.  The amount of fun that you get from the game compared to the cost is awesome.

2. Set up/clean up- This game sets up and cleans up very quickly compared to other games.  That is a plus when you don't have a lot of time to game, but you want to get a game in of some sort.

3. Logical set of rules- sometimes inexpensive games come with rules that leave me wanting more from them.  That's not the case with Battleground.  I feel the rules were thought out well, and there is nothing in the game, that I feel, is overpowering or dominating.  I like the factions thus far, and I can't wait for more!

My only question is with the Punic War set.  I have the basic set and I'm planning on getting the reinforcements pack, but are there plans for doing other wars or periods?  I read some of the material you posted on the designing of the units for the Punic War set which really impressed me with how much thought went into the process.  You guys are really top notch.

Thanks for your time.

Welcome aboard, Chad!

I discovered the game myself about 3 years ago, and totally agree with your assessments of the game.  Glad you're enjoying it!

As to your question, a second historical set has been developed:  Alexander the Great vs. Persia.  The set has been laid out and playtested, but a delay involving the artwork means that you're unlikely to see it in print until late 2012.  Further down the road are Spanish vs. Aztecs as well as a fantasy faction based on Ancient China.

Informally, if you look at the "Faction Design and Development" section of the Forum, you can see oodles of  unpublished "homebrew" factions, including Sadadin vs. Jerusalem and a fantasy version of the Byzantine Empire

-------

And I'd be remiss if I didn't welcome you without mentioning the upcoming Championship Tournament happening in February near Boston, Mass--with special prizes for new players as well as a mini-tourament for anyone knocked out of the main one....just in case you're in the area (or have the airline miles  Wink ) and want to meet lots of other players, not least the game designer himself!

Thanks for the reply!

I'm glad to hear that another historical set is in the works and it sounds like it will be a lot of fun too.  Boston is a little too far for me to go for a convention.  I live in a suburb of Chicago and with work I kind of have to stay local.  Thanks for the invite!  Would you possibly be looking for someone to run demos at conventions near Chicago?  I am running a Warmaster tournament at Adepticon this year, but I could possibly do something for next year.  There is also the little cons in Chicagoland that I could hit up too.  I'm not asking, I'm just asking.

Welcome Chad! I also agree with al of your assessments. I am/was into miniatures for almost 30 years and have spent the bucks and the hours painting and am very psyched to find a miniatures game (cause that's what this is, minus the minis  Wink) that I spend almost all my time playing vs. painting/setting up.

The rules are great and the written command rules are top notch; simple, subtle, and powerful.

I am flying to Boston next month, but I'm almost 50, and for most of my life I could have never afforded to do this. It is cool that you are only as far away as Chicago, as I live in Saint Paul, MN. Maybe I will get out your way and we could throw down.

I have a blog and it covers many different aspects of Battleground, including the components and accessories I make for the game because even though all a guy needs are a deck, die, and marker, I still find the game more enjoyable with quality components.

Hi Chad,

First off, let me congratulate you on your excellent name.

Second, we are always looking for folks to run demos or events at conventions.  We've had volunteers do everything from doing a few demos to running events throughout the weekend to selling product.  Let me know what you're interested in doing and I'll be glad to support your efforts.

Best,
Chad

I am actually interested in supporting your products because I believe they merit the support; however, in the same breath, I am not really looking for free product either.  If I gain anything for my efforts, I want to feel that I earned it and I want you too feel the same.  We can look at what I can do for you and go from there.  If you want to get a foot into any conventions around Chicagoland and I can help you do so, let me know.  We can definately work something out.  Just to let you know, I am a dispatcher for a major plumbing company that needs me there when I am scheduled, so I need to know of commitments that you need from me in advance.  With that said, the sky is the limit, so to speak.  I really want to help in different aspects.  I am also a certified teacher of History in the State of Illinois that focussed on Ancient History in college.  University of Illinois, Champaign/Urbana.  Finding a teaching job  in History in Illinois is not easy at all.  Anyways, Chad, I'd like to help.

By the way, we do have agreat name!
