It seems strange to me that with the slew of pseudo-medieval fantasy armies we have available, that there are no halberds in any of them. Such a great weapon for foot troops and no representation. Seems like they'd be pretty easy to stat up. I think that a +1 power and the spear ability of +1 skill vs. cavalry and large would just about cover it. Just thought I'd mention it. Plus the forums are moving slow and I'd like to get some conversation going.

Already on it! The current playtest version of the Spanish [1] has halberds. Can't recall their exact stats, and there's still lost of playtesting to be done, but I think you're more-or-less on target with how they'll work.
[1] The next release is Alexander vs. Persia, then the Wuxing Empire, then probably Spanish vs. Aztecs. As a reminder, Niko is the lead developer of the Spanish & Aztec factions.

Agreed...I love halberds. I wanted them included with the Hawks; I don't quite remember why they didn't make the cut, but I think Rob wanted Pikemen instead. (In hindsight, I think I'm clearly right.)

Cool. Maybe there is a reason to buy that set. I'm not terribly interested in the Spanish or the Aztecs, but I halberds make it more appealing.

Note to self: add a unit with Halberds to every set from now on.

The sad thing is: that might just work.

I don't think they should get the extra attack when not charging, nor should they get the holding against cavalry bonus. Just the power 6 and normal +1 vs. cavalry/large would be enough to simulate it's versatility at the sacrifice of specialization. They should move 3.5" though. Halberdiers aren't likely to be wearing full plate. And they definitely should have been in Hawkshold, damnit!

Yeah, Spain has halberds. They actually do wear plate (historical Spanish halberdeers of that period were very heavily armored) but still move 3.5", primarily for gameplay reasons and because there's not a lot of evidence they were particularly bad at moving around the battlefield.

Thanks Niko! I'm always happy to be corrected if I learn something in the process. Too much warhammer adles your historic thinking.

Also I should disclaim by saying that, as always, any faction that's unpublished might change. That unit's likely to stay but I could always prove wrong about details of equipment or stats due to playtesting or research or w/e.

If the Hawks had Pow 6 spears, though, they'd be in just about every army I build as opposed to the Pikes who are the unit I use the least.

WAY underpriced if they can be lined up vs. cavalry or big guys, overpriced vs. everyone else. And of course they slow the army way down, so only do well when on Hold, or when in an army consisting of Great Swords & Heavy Infantry and conveniently forgetting about having to meet Core. ---- You'll be happy to know that in the upcoming Alexander vs. Persia the Hawk Pikemen template was discarded wholesale when designing Alexander's pike-armed Foot Companions.

This does not make me happy. Happiness is mine when I see enemy armies filled with junk units that I can stomp all over. And mini-skirts. Mini-skirts make me happy.
