No complaints about game balance or mechanics, I was just wondering, why do death knight have a moral value? Are they alive? If so, how come they can be reanimated? Isn't it the same case with ghouls, being alive, I mean?

I think Death Knights are undead but intelligent, unlike the skeletons, zombies, etc. that make up most of the rest of the Undead army. So they have a morale value (since they are self-aware and have a sense of self-preservation) but can be reanimated.

You could look at it as Death Knights as being more akin to leaders who make decisions regarding strategy and tactics. The skeletons and zombies are more robotic. In addition, perhaps this was done for game balance purposes or to keep the unit from being too expensive.

Of course, it is still too expensive... But yeah, I don't know what CMD -- costs but I shudder to think how expensive those guys would be if they were unbreakable.

Some Undead are virtually mindless -- they just keep obeying their orders until they're dead. Others have their own will and can feel pain and fear, just like mortals. In the Undead Army (only the first foray Battleground has taken into the undead sphere), only Ghouls and Death Knights fall into the latter category.

Wait, aren't the ghouls actually alive? Or are they just borderline enough that they also can't be healed?
Or am I misremembering entirely?

Not sure exactly what you're asking? All of the units in the Undead army can be reanimated using the army special ability.

Oh, I just recalled the Ghouls having an "alive!" keyword that meant they couldn't be reanimated and took checks, etc.
That'll show me for losing my undead army packs.

Ghouls are considered alive in the Warhammer Fantasy Battles game, I am almost sure...

You know, I've never played a game of WHFB in my life, but I suddenly recall that the Vampire Counts were sitting around in my bathroom for a while due to a housemate. This is certainly where I got it, my bad. Shows about how often I play Ghouls in BGFW though, heh.

Not quite...Swarm of Rats can't.
