You could mix with Angels and Demons. And get sued by the producers of that movie...

Ever looked into celt/Irish mythology for inspiration? In irish mythology you have stories of successive invasions eventually driving previous races under ground. Collectively, these races are referred to as the Sidhe or the "people under the mound", or "The lordly ones". The Sidhe include races like the Formorians, twisted hideous and giant like but also intelligent and able to use magic, said to control storms and mists. Here is a picture. http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2010/099/f/2/New_Fomorians_by_DaveAllsop.jpgYou also have the Cu sith. Enormous coal black hounds (the size of cows) with dark red eyes or flaming eyes that cause great fear and are harbingers of death. Here is a picture of the cu sith. More well known are the banshee or the bananach. The Banshee are spirit like harbingers of death who cause fear and death with their screams and the bananach are hideous women or hags that haunt the battlefield. A little more obscure is the Fachen, a creature so hideous it was supposed to induce heart attacks. There is a lot to work with and if your interested I can send you more ideas. I'd think in creating a back story you'd want the basic premise that these were ancient races and creatures driven underground that eventually coalesced into a unified force. Forced together they rise again in an attempt to reconquer the surface world. They would allow you a lot of diversity in units and I've never seen any game really use them, maing them wholly unique.

Thought of another potential faction. How about one based roughly on the medieval near eastern civilizations. I'm talking a fusion of Turkish/Armenian/Moorish cultures. Horse archers, Jinetes, Cataphracts, maybe even something like Janissaries. Make it cavalry and archer centric with soft infantry based on ranged attacks. You've got the Umenzi and you've got the lizard men, with the exceptions of these two all the other factions seem very euro-centric and a faction like that might be a nice balance to bridge the gap. The battle of Tours, the crusades and the muslim conquest of north africa are good examples of how to incorporate them into the world setting. For the more fantastic element you've got Djinn, and in Armenian mythology you've got the Aralez ;dog like creatures that resusitate fallen warriors; Nhang which were crocodile/serpent like shape shifters; and lastly you've got the Piatek which were similar to wingless Griffins. You wouldn't necessarily have to make them human even, but basing the faction on the culture would bring an interesting diversity.

eskimos: tiny snow people who prefer to stay at midrange to throw spears or use crossbows they rely on yeti squads, polar bear calvary, and giant snow beasts to keep advancing armies at bay. Also have a snow priest unit which can create a snow storm making it harder for enemies ranged attacks to hit. maybe a unit which can place a scout hawk each turn to give line of site on hidden units.

a Japanese fantasy army. samurai, samurai archers, naginata samurai (female), ashigaru spearmen, farmers, mounted samurai spearmen, mounted samurai archers, ninja (skirmish +1/0 vs ranged, blowdart guns, no penalty for manuvering, smoke bombs allow for 1 time escape from combat without damage), shogun's guard (buff samurai), Naga (snake men, very fast moving, low armor but lots of attacks), Half demons (large humanoid with some demonic features wielding kanab? for high strength, fearsome), Kitsune (fox spirit skirmish +1/0 vs ranged, no penalty for manuvering, since foxes are spirits of mischief: illusion: allows redeployment of one unit after both sides have deployed. (bless): may protect a unit from being targeted by an enemy farther than 7'' away), Giant toad calvary(regeneration, has short ranged tongue attack (javelin), can jump over terrain and attack airborne units, 3 impact hits due to jumping into combat), Oni (similar to giant)

Hey, I think this thread has been dead for a while, but I'm going to try and bring it back. I've just gotten into Battleground and I'm loving it. Just thought I would go on and check out what kinds of factions people were proposing. I think there are a lot of great ideas being thrown around. (I'm especially excited about a rat-men or a fantasy Egyptian faction) But I'd also like to propose my own if I could. In fact, it's a bit of an edit and expansion of leemie's eskimo proposal, instead they're not just eskimos....
We'll call them "tundrians". They would be a humanoid faction, but they're skin would have a blue color to it (fitting because they would be a snow/ice faction). I feel like the game could use a few more fantasy human factions, but this faction would be unique enough that it would almost be human and not-human at the same time. The faction would have some standard units, such as tundrian spearmen, swordsmen, archers, slingers, etc. but they would also have some more unique units like tundrian ice mages, tundrian ice blades, polar bears, and a yeti. The mages could cast ice related spells that could do things such as damage the enemy or create blizzards that could slow the enemy's movement or shorten the enemy's range. The tundrian ice blades could be elite soldiers wielding blades made of "tundrian ice", which would give them a special ability with which they could freeze an enemy unit during melee combat. The frozen enemy unit would be unable to move or attack for two turns, but would also not be able to be attacked himself. Finally, I think the polar bear and yeti units could speak for themselves as to what they would be doing... RAMPAGING.
They could also have their own unique cavalry unit. Perhaps they could ride something similar to the tauntauns on Hoth from Star Wars?
What you could also do with this faction is instead of having every unit card displaying the units standing on green grass, each unit could be displayed standing on a white snow terrain. It would just be something to make this faction a little bit more unique looking with white cards instead of the usual green ones.
That's all I've got, but I just thought I'd throw this suggestion out there. Keep up the good work YMG!

Welcome jacisback! You can take a look through the Faction Design and Development threads here and find all kinds of player developed stuff. Somebody brought up a mythical Egyptian type army a couple of years ago, but I'm not sure if it went anywhere. Think along the lines of the Mummy movies with Brendan Frasier. The Tundran idea is intriguing. I've been kicking around ideas for a fantasy Viking faction and some of your ideas are along the line of the things I've cooked up since both are from the far North, but that shouldn't keep you from posting them.

Great! I'm glad you think so! Perhaps by adding your vikings to the tundrian mix it would be enough for a full scale "Faction of the North". I don't know, I just think that would be a pretty sweet Regardless, I'm just excited that I can continue to look forward to new factions coming out. Thanks for taking the time to hear me out on this one!

I vote for the Beastman faction... I recall reading something about it earlier, then nothing further. I was into the Beastman army in Warhammer Fantasy and would love to see them playable in this game.
