The commander of the army has got to be somewhere, and in fantasy battles its usually front and center, and wherever he is his prescence is going to be significant and noted. To that end I am soliciting opinions on a home ruled variant.

During the orders phase, an "L" (for leader) should be placed on a unit when giving that unit its Standing Orders. That unit is considered the escort.

Universal traits and effects
- If a unit is within LOS of the unengaged escort, it is within command range. A unit not within command range requires an extra command action per command action spent, additionally, in order to play a command card on a unit out of command range a player must first discard a command card. A green card that can effect numerous units must have a card discarded for each out of command unit that a player wished to be subject to the card's effects.

- When the escort unit is engaged any unit not adjacent to it is considered out of command range.

- Each turn the player has one extra command action that may only be spent on the  escort.

 Unique additional traits and effects
************************************************************
May              - Unit is Fearsome
select            - Unit is Fearless
one of           - Unit has a (3)/6/6 Spell Attack Range 17.5" LOS
these            - Unit gets +1 MC
************************************************************
Escort may be from another faction. This may represent an actual unit from another faction or just a unit from the same faction but with the stats of another faction.

Escort may possess one faction ability from another faction.

My purpose with this is to create a unique hero driven command unit within the BG framework. I'm just throwing out ideas here. Maybe just the Universal effects would be good enough and the special effects too much. Maybe certain combos would be considered too powerful and should be disallowed.

What about if the Leader's unit is destroyed? Should the player be considered killed on the battlefield? I like this "sudden death" version, it is especially poignant if the player is considered personally on the battlefield in that capacity. Maybe that is too deadly and the leader should just be transferred to another unit (next closest?). Perhaps the play would revert back to regular rules in that case for that player.

I just threw out a grab bag of ideas. Smiley

I don't play the Warmachine/Hordes miniatures game, but I think the objective in the game is to kill the enemy leader (Warcaster).  They usually have special abilities that they grant to units within a certain radius.  This could be an interesting twist on the genre.  However, I think we'd probably want to make individualized Leader units.  Otherwise, I'd always attach it to some Skirmisher and have him play keep-away.  We'd want people to make a choice between having a tough front-line leader vs. a squishier ranged leader.

Yeah, I'm trying to avoid the heroes on the board, separate cards thing. I really just wanted to put the actual player general on the board for the personal touch. I was thinking about it today and was leaning against any personalized abilities. Personally, I'd favor just the Universal traits and abilities.

If you play this variant you should have to give up command actions like the Alexander faction does to field generals.

Perhaps, but with the command limitations it may not be necessary. Note also that I'm assuming both players will be using this option, so it should balance. Plus, what is the point of giving the escort a bonus command action if you are penalyzing the whole army anyway? You could just reword it to say that one command action every turn may only be used on the escort unit. Ugh.
