Hey All,

The Battle for Hill 218 has arrived.  The main shipment won't arrive for another month or so (putting the game in stores in early December), but we have a small advance shipment that I'll be bringing with me to the BoardGameGeek convention in Dallas next month.  The whole game is contained in a single deck box, with an MSRP of $9.95.

But what if you're not going to BGG.CON or you just don't feel like waiting?  No problem!  Not only can you download the rules to learn how to play, thanks to the generosity of Andrew Gross you can play Hill 218 right now...on your computer.  Check out our Hill 218 page -- http://www.yourmovegames.com/pages/hill218.html -- for details.  (Due to technical problems it will be a bit before we have a front-page or sidebar link available.)

It was over three years ago that Darwin first showed me a card game "prototype" he'd made by taking a sharpie to the backs of a bunch of Magic commons.  I was hooked, and have wanted to publish it ever since.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Man i'm terrible at this game, though i'm fuzzy on how a lot of it works still... computer is destroying me.

My problem is that once you get behind, you're done.  There doesn't seem to be any comeback value that I can see, or is it just me?  also the 1 action on the first turn is killing me as I place infantry, the computer places infantry and something else, kills my infantry.... rinse... repeat...

Try selecting going second instead of going first, and see how the computer handles going first.

The AI isn't great, but it's probably decent enough to give you some basic ideas.

Also, I think you're correct about not being able to come back if you're far behind, but that's not such a big deal in a game that only takes 10-15 minutes to play.  And barring a really unlucky starting hand, once you get some practice you shouldn't often fall far behind; most games should be close all the way to the end.

The good news is that this game is skill intensive enough that if you are as good or better than your opponent, comebacks can definitely happen.  If you fall behind because they have a better draw, you need to try to stay alive until inevitably the cards you are drawing are better than theirs. If you play the game often enough you will find that you will come from behind sometimes.

At the moment you are a novice playing against an above average player so it wouldn't be a surprise if you fell behind and even less of a shock if once you were behind you ended up losing. The computer is tough enough that if it has a better draw than me and I fall behind I sometimes lose. The great thing about playing against a tough opponent now is that when you get the actual card game and start playing against your friends you will have the satisfaction of much butt-kicking. Good luck!

Darwin and I have comebacks in maybe 25-30% of our games, including some where we think the game is completely out of reach.

I'd like to provide some tips, but Darwin and I are both really reluctant to give strategy lessons on a game that we've been playing for years and for which we've had so many strategic iterations.
